Panthers vs. Eagles (Pre-Season)

Not much to get excited.....or discouraged about in this game. The weather was terrible causing a delay, also causing bad playing conditions for the teams.

First off, Carolina was short 6 offensive weapons. WR's Smith, Jarrett, Hackett, Robinson, and TE's Rosario, and Barnidge sat out the entire game. Plus defensively, we had Gamble, Lucas, and Harris sitting out, which is pretty much our entire secondary. Marshall and Colcough were our starters at corner. Marshall did pretty decent and so did Colcough. I say they did decent because they were backups and they were going up against starters. Colcough lacks coverage skills. He is an excellent tackler and even caused a few incompletions. One of them was a dropped interception, which would have been a touchdown if pulled in. With that being said, Carolina shut the Eagles out the first three quarters. The Eagles WR Reggie Brown received an injury believed to be related to his Achilles injury prior to the game. They still had Kevin Curtis, Hank Baskett, Greg Lewis, and rookie DeSean Jackson at WR. After that backups filled the positions. The Eagles kept Baskett, Lewis, and Jackson in the game in the fourth quarter, who all except for Jackson receive pretty good playing time in real season games. They were matched up against third or fourth string defensive players. So all in all, Carolina did great on defense against the Eagles starting offense. However, they did not do that great on offense. They put up no points except for two field goals. The touchdown came on a 78 yard return by Richard Marshall. A fake field goal gone terribly wrong, it was like they handed it off to Marshall. Jon Stewart, Carolina's first round pick, didnt show a spark on his four carries. Nothing was open and he was nursing an injured toe. The Eagles racked up 24 points in the fourth quarter. It was real close with less than two minutes to go in regulation. Matt Moore's pass was tipped and intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Roland. Putting the game out of reach.

Carolina Panthers 2008 Game by Game Analysis

Sunday Sept 7 @ San Diego Chargers- We could have a chance to win this game. We don't know how L.T. will bounce back after his surgery and we know a knee injury is one of the worst ones you can have. They do have an excellent D, but we have made improvements and will have something to prove.

Sunday Sept 14 CHICAGO BEARS- We will probably beat them simply cuz Smith seems to tear there D up when we play them. Plus, their offense isn't that good and they just got rid of Muhammad and Berrian, and kept GrossMan. So if we kick it away from Hester we should have a great chance to win.

Sunday Sept 21 @ Minnesota Vikings- The Vikings we played when Chris Gamble passed to Marshall on.......whatever that play was, are not the same team. Granted, they have not got all the pieces together but you know how Carolina loses the games they are expected to win. Plus, A.P. is dangerous. It will be up to our run defense to decide the winner of that game.

Sunday Sept 28 ATLANTA FALCONS- This should be a win. Atlanta doesn't have anyone to cover Smith and we just added some receivers to pull some attention away from him. Smith should have about 200 yards each time we play the Falcons, but don't ever count anyone out.

Sunday Oct 5 K.C. CHIEFS- Kansas City actually has a pretty good D. I don't think D-Will will man-handle them like you say. However, I do think we win this game. The Chiefs offense hasn't been what they use to be. If we can hold Larry Johnson, then Dwayne Bowe and Tony Gonzales will be there only real threats.

Sunday Oct 12 @ Tampa Bay Bucs- The Bucs have made some improvements, I think they beat us one time. I'm not gonna guess which one, but if we are 4-2 or better by this time (which we should be) I say we take this game.

Sunday Oct 19 NEW ORLEANS SAINTS- The Saints didn't do to good last year and we all know what that means when your in the NFC South, you are probably gonna do better the next year. (unless your the Falcons) So I say we split the division games with New Orleans too. Division wins are hard to come by in most divisions.

Sunday Oct 26 ARIZONA CARDINALS- This is a team we will have to score some points on. I am not too worried about them stopping us seeing that their defense has not been real great of late. However, their offense has the potential to be on of the best. Our pass rush will be key in this matchup.

Sunday Nov 2 BYE

Sunday Nov 9 @ Oakland Raiders- SMITH AND HALL back at it again. Win or lose, this will be an exciting game. The Raiders have a top 3 or 5 defense and should win be better this coming up season. I don't think they will beat us, but I think it will be a low scoring game.

Sunday Nov 16 DETROIT LIONS- Detroit really broke out last year in their passing game. That is the only thing that scares me. If Holt and Harris can mesh well together we will win this game. I don't think we will have a lot of problems scoring on them, but we Holt and Harris will have to play solid to take this one.

Sunday Nov 23 @ Atlanta Falcons-

Sunday Nov 30 @ Green Bay Packers- It all depends on how well Rodgers can run the offense. Green Bay has a running game again, but without Favre it is hard to say how dominant their passing game will be. They have a top 5 D and are coming off a season where they were one game away from the Super Bowl. So they can taste it and they want to get back. We will have trouble with this team if Rodgers molds well with them.

Monday Dec 8 TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS-

Sunday Dec 14 DENVER BRONCOS- If we were at Mile High I would worry more about this game. You know, because of the altitude. But it is a home game and they picked up Colbert so this one should be ours. Brandon Marshall should be back from his entertainment center injury so this game should be close. Plus, they have one of the better CB tandems in the league.

Sunday Dec 21 @ New York Giants- I don't know about this game. I think we can take them myself. I think it will be a tough game. They have our style of play, all except for the Burress-like receiver. It should be a good game though. Tought matchups for our defense. MAN!!!! I wish this was our first game.

Sunday Dec 28 @ New Orleans Saints-

PANTHERS 11-5 or 10-6

Panther's 2008 Regular Season Schedule

I think it is great the panthers start off against the Chargers. San Diego made the playoffs last year and look to be there again this season. If Carolina could start off and beat the Chargers, it would set the tone for the season. The win would give the Panthers some much needed confidence to start the year.

We will find early what our run defense can do, since we have to play teams like the Chargers and theVikings in the first three games of the season. It is uncertain how L.T. will bounce back from his knee injury from last year, but he is still a big play threat. Plus, Carolina has to play Minnesota and their incredible one-two punch in A.P. and Chester Taylor.

They will be playing two tough road games to end the season. One tough game against the defending NFL champs, and one against New Orleans. We all know that division games are always tough. Both of these games being away, Carolina better get off to a good start if they plan on being on the field in January.

A few key games to look out for are:

Week 10 vs. Oakland Raiders- Smith and Hall's rivalry not over yet, and Drew Carter will be lining up for the Raiders. Look for this game to be full of emotion and adreniline.

Week 15 vs. Denver Broncos- Keary Colbert's new home, interesting to see how he will do against his old team.

NFL Division Leader Predictions

NFC North: Vikings. They have AP and we all know you hold your breath when he gets the ball, and there defense is excellent especially against the run. Plus, Green Bay's play is uncertain since Rodgers will be at the helm with the retirement of Brett. Chicago still has GrossMan on the team, enough said. They also dropped Berrian and Muhammad. The Lions will be a very close second. They are a great team, but just got rid of Rogers and will come up short on the defensive side.

NFC South: Panthers. They have had the talent to take it all the way for a few years, but has came up short. They finally got soome recievers to complement Smitty and cause some real damage to opposing teams. The Bucs will be second followed by the Saints and the lowly Falcons.

NFC East: Dallas. I think after losing in the playoffs Dallas will come back strong. I don't see the Giants winning the division. The Redskins are not gonna be able to win out the other teams. Look for the Eagles to be back in the playoffs this year with the addition of Samuel at CB. I believe he is an excellent addition and will change the momentum in many of their games.

NFC West.: Seahawks. They have many plenty of runnning backs to carry the load and a weak division. Rams are gonna come back and be better this year, but not make the playoffs. Arizona will be second, they could even steal the division from Seattle but I wouldn't get my hopes up. 49ers are going nowhere even with the addition of Bryant Johnson they just can't seem to get it done from year to year.

AFC North: Browns. Did great last year and will come back even stronger with an extra target in Stallworth to stretch the field. He will help free up Edwards and Winslow. Steelers will be second to the Browns. Bengals have way too many problems, especially with an unhappy Chad Johnson. The Ravens will again have one of the top defenses, but will lack a potent offense.

AFC South: Colts. Peyton and Co. will win it again. Jacksonville will be second behind the strong running of Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor, and their defense will soon take their place in the top defenses. Texans will be last, good team just an excellent division. Titans will miss again, but again only because they are in the AFC South.

AFC East: The Patriots will win, no one to really contend. Miami will be better than last year, but that's not really saying much. Bills will not make playoffs, not enough talent. Jets won't make playoffs either, but will be second in division.

AFC West: Chargers. LT, enough said. Broncos picked up Colbert, enough said. Raiders are gonna be better with a top 5 D, but not gonna make the playoffs. The Chiefs will also do good with a top D, but will fall short of playoffs because they are in the AFC.

Carolina Panthers 1st Round Draft Pick

The Carolina Panthers have had a pretty decent history in drafting in the first round. They have drafted players like Julius Peppers, Chris Gamble, Jordan Gross, DeAngelo Williams, and last year they drafted Jon Beason. As we all know Beason stepped in for Dan Morgan when Morgan suffered another concussion near the beginning of the season, and added 100+ tackles to the stat sheet. They need to draft another player who can jump in and contribute now. They have few pressing needs since they filled some positions through free agency. Their major needs now are OT, RB, and DE. So who do they need to draft?I say OT, Chris Williams or Jeff Otah. With the addition of Toefield their RB needs are less significant than the OT position. Besides, without proper protection your offensive weapons are just shooting blanks. They also need a DE. Rucker will be retiring soon because of knee problems, but he should play a final year. So they could address that in a later round. Plus, they have other DE such as Johnson and McGlover that could step up this year. So, there top three picks should look something like this: 1st pick-OT Chris Williams,2nd pick-DE, 3rd pick- RB.
